Description

Fluctuations in the number of atoms forming the Bose-Einstein condensate were the subject of a decade-long debate, started by E. Schroedinger's comments on A. Einstein's results. The condensate was not produced in laboratories until 1995, but it only became possible to measure the fluctuations around 2016. Through collaboration with leading experimental groups, the project manager confirmed in two papers in Physical Review Letters that the ultracold gas should be described by a microcanonical ensemble. Theoretical results were limited to ideal or very weakly interacting gas. In this project the full problem will be addressed, taking collisions between atoms reliably into account.
